"Empty value returned for nonexistent global variable"

Overview

This information event indicates that an Action attempted to use a Global Variable that does not exist. Instead of raising an error, Automation Workshop returns an empty value and continues execution.

This behavior helps prevent unnecessary workflow interruptions in scenarios where missing variables are acceptable or expected. However, it may also indicate that a required Global Variable has not been created or is no longer available.

Event examples

See some examples of the Empty value returned Event messages:

  • Task "Remote deploy" Action "If" empty value returned for nonexistent "init server" global variable.
  • Action "Write in Service Log" empty value returned for nonexistent "data" global variable.
  • Empty value returned for nonexistent "processing" global variable.

Reason

This situation typically occurs when a Task is imported from another machine, restored from backup, or copied without including all required Global Variables.

It may also happen if a Global Variable was renamed or removed, but is still referenced by one or more Actions. However, if an Action expects the variable to contain a specific value, returning an empty value may lead to unexpected behavior or incomplete execution.

Solution

Create the missing Global Variable in the Global Variables manager or update the Action to use an existing one. If the variable is optional, ensure the workflow logic correctly handles empty values. Ensure all required Global Variables exist and are properly defined.

Note

This behavior is configurable. In earlier versions, referencing a nonexistent Global Variable could result in an error. The current default returns an empty value to improve workflow resilience. If strict validation is required, review available settings or registry options to restore the previous behavior.

Seamless automation in action! 90 seconds to efficiency.
