"Terminate App failed"

Overview

This error message indicates that Terminate App Action failed to close a specified program. The Action found that the app or background process is running, however it was unable to terminate it.

Event examples

See some examples of the Terminate failed Event messages:

  • Task "System Backup" Action "Terminate App" failed on "ShadowCopy.exe". Access is denied. [os:5; aw:68]
  • Action "Terminate App" failed on "Process". The parameter is incorrect. [os:87; aw:44]

Syntax reminder

The Terminate App Action may encounter a "syntax" error when it is attempting to locate a process while no input is provided for the App name or executable.

If you are using dynamic variables, it is possible that the variable is empty. An example of the actual error message:

  • The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. [os:123; aw:36]

Note

When Automation Workshop attempts to close an application, it may encounter an "Access denied" error if another process has already started the process of closing the app or if the app is in the process of closing itself. Subsequent attempts to close the app will also result in the "Access denied" error.

However, it is safe to ignore this error as the app will eventually close on its own. To prevent your workflow from accidental stopping, choose to ignore the "Access denied 5" error in the Advanced Fallback Options.
