modify file dates - preserving system files

This tutorial provides information, how to modify file dates preserving system files. Tutorial below is step by step example using Windows XP. Some of steps may vary, if you are using different Windows version.

  • STEP 1: In this tutorial we use Windows Explorer to locate the files. Start Windows Explorer - click on Start button, then point to Programs, then Accessories, then click on Windows Explorer icon or menu line.

  • STEP 2: Locate files which date you want to modify and select these files.

  • STEP 3: Press right mouse button on these file. Context menu will appear.

  • STEP 4: From context menu choose Properties. Files Property tabs will appear.

  • STEP 5: Click on Date tab. Now you are ready to enter file's date / time values to modify files dates. But before...

  • STEP 6: ...leave "Don't apply to system files" check box checked. NOTE! System files also will be affected (if selected during STEP 2), if you clear this check box. System files are required by Windows in order to run properly, and by default are not shown in folder listings. Do not delete or modify system files unless you are 100% sure.

  • STEP 7: Now enter appropriate date values in date / time fields and click on OK button.
